Austin Beutner
Austin Beutner, Los Angeles’ First Deputy Mayor, Chief Executive for Economic & Business Policy,
and Interim General Manager, Department of Water and Power in conversation with Matthew Toledo, publisher of the Los Angeles Business Journal
Co-Presented with KPCC
As L.A.’s First Deputy Mayor & Chief Executive for Economic and Business Policy, Austin Beutner brings a unique perspective to his role based on experience in the private sector leading successful companies and in the public sector spearheading economic development. Beutner’s role at City Hall is to develop and execute strategies to create new jobs and make L.A. a business friendly city. About half of the city’s departments – from the Port of Los Angeles to the city's sprawling Department of Water and Power utility – report to him and he reports directly to Mayor Villaraigosa.
Beutner’s background includes stints in investment banking at Smith Barney and The Blackstone Group. He later worked in the U.S. State Department stationed in Russia following the breakup of the Soviet Union where he concentrated on economic development issues. In 1996, Beutner co-founded the investment-banking firm Evercore Partners, a world-class financial services firm. When he hired Beutner, the Mayor noted that it is imperative to make “job creation the overarching focus at all levels and in all offices and departments." He was also recently appointed interim General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Beutner was born in New York and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Dartmouth College where earned a degree in Economics in 1982. Beutner and his family have lived in Los Angeles for the past ten years. Beutner currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the California Institute of the Arts; Chairman of the Board for The Broad Stage in Santa Monica; Co-Chairman of the Community Arts Program; and Chairman of the Board of the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He is a board member of Carlthorp School and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
The Drucker Business Forum is produced by the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management with additional support from the Pearson Foundation.
